This is going to be my last post for a while. I am going to recap all of the wonderful things we talked about. In our first post I talked about some of the history of the Olympics, the first winner, Koroibos of Elis, and the tradition of the Olympics. In our second post I talked about the most popular ancient Olympics sport which was Chariot racing, and told you guys that they used modified war chariots even after they stopped using them in war. Then I talked about the most popular sport in the Olympics now, swimming. I told you about the person who has the most Olympic medals, Michael Phelps. Lastly I told you a little bit more about the history and about the awards. I told you that some people thought the olympics weren't to honor Zeus, and that the judges would give the awards to the winners them selves. Signing off, Big Daddy Jacob.
Hey Guys! Big Daddy Jacob here! I thought for the last post about the Olympics, I would tell you a little more about the history, and also I would tell you about the last part of the Olympics--- The Awards!! Well here you go: The olympic games were played for 12 centuries until the Emperor Theodosius, banned all of the Pagan cults. One theory is that the games were created to honor the Pagan gods. A more popular legend is that they were created to honor Zeus. The legend goes like this: Zeus was fighting his father for control of everything. After Zeus beat his father, they made a temple and giaant statue of him to worship him. People soon after started to hold festivals to honor him. The festivals soon became the olympics. People who won the awards in the Olympics got their rewards right after the event. After the whole games were done, all of the people who won would get their name announced by the herald. The Hellanodikis who was their judge, would place a palm branch in the winners hands, while a red ribbon would be tied around their head. On the last day of the Olympics, they had a big award ceremony. The Hellanodikis would put a wreath on the winners head and then they would celebrate. Signing off, Big Daddy Jacob Sources here and here Hey guys! I’m here to contrast chariot races and swimming. Chariot races were really popular. The original chariot race was around the stump of a tree and then it got longer. Some people say that chariot races were the start of the olympics, but others totally disagree. What do you think? The chariots that they used were modified war chariots, and they kept using them even after they used war chariots in war. At first the owners of the chariots would ride them, but then the owners would have slaves drive them, and if the slave won, then the owner would get the prize. Women could win the chariot race, when women could not compete in the Olympics because they could get a slave to drive it for them. Now the most popular Olympic sport is swimming. Men and women compete in 16 different types of swimming events. The person with the most Olympic medals is Michael Phelps with 22 medals, which he got by swimming. The United states has the most swimming metals. Now to contrast: Back then only men could compete in the Olympics but now men and women can compete in all Olympics. See ya next time! - Big Daddy Jacob Sources: Here Here Here Hey guys, I think that before I teach you about the way the Olympics have evolved, I should teach you about what the ancient Olympics were like. The ancient Olympics were held every four years. The Olympics were to honor the god Zeus. People from all around Greece came to compete or watch the Olympics. The first winner of the Olympics was, Koroibos of Elis and he won the Stadion Foot-Race. Before the games started all of the competitors had to swear to compete with honor and respect. No wars were allowed to be held during the Olympics, because it disrespected Zeus. Women weren't allowed to compete in the Olympics, and they couldn't even watch them. Athletes trained with personal trainers to build up certain muscles in their body. Most of the time the athletes competed naked so they had more freedom to move. See ya next time! There are many amazing things to learn about the Olympics, but the most important is how they have evolved. I chose this topic so I could learn about the older Olympics and how they have changed over all the years that they have been happening. Three things I am interested about of this topic are: Why the Olympics stopped and how they started again; The most popular sport in the Olympics; and The history and awards of the Olympics.
